The Quartet for the End of Time was written by Messiaen in the Stalag VIIIA prisoner of war camp in Görlitz aided by a guard who provided manuscript paper and a place to work. It was premiered in the camp on 15th of January 1941 by Messiaen and three fellow prisoners on instruments including a cello obtained with contributions from prisoners. The piece was inspired by the Book of Revelation.
The proceeds of the concert will go to support Music in Prisons and Citizens Advice.
