Collaboration with Koestler Arts
Inner Rhythm: Music from the Criminal Justice System
20 November, 7.30pm
Purcell Room, Southbank Centre
Presented by Koestler Arts and the Irene Taylor Trust, this event features a mixture of live and recorded performances of music and poetry and a Q&A panel discussion, drawing inspiration from Koestler Arts’ exhibition Rock, Paper, Scissors, curated by the Parental Imprisonment Collective (PIC). The host for the evening will be poet Joelle Taylor.
Singer, songwriter and performer Izo FitzRoy has worked with the Irene Taylor Trust (including ITT project musicians Nick Hayes and Emma Williams) to co-produce and perform a new piece of music created by people with lived experience of the criminal justice system.
This new work is directly inspired by some of the artworks on display in the exhibition and is performed live with the Woolf Quartet (Royal Academy of Music alums) and musicians emerging from ITT’s programmes, with images of the artworks shown in the background. This process of creation allows the performers to connect with the exhibition and be creatively inspired by it, the artworks and their stories, beyond its run.
Tickets for Inner Rhythm: Music from the Criminal Justice System are available to Southbank members from 23rd September and go on general release 25th September. Last year the event completely sold out, so we recommend booking swiftly!

This follows from our highly successful partnership with Koestler Arts last year during our 30th anniversary celebrations, which resulted in the piece Horizons We Carry, inspired by Koestler’s exhibition Night Owls and Abstractions.
Koestler Arts is a leading arts charity working across the criminal justice system, aiming to unlock hope, talent and potential in the lives of people in criminal justice settings.
The annual Koestler Awards are the UK’s only national arts awards programme for people within secure settings. Alongside the awards, they provide arts mentoring, creative opportunities, engagement programmes, events and publications – working in partnership with artists, cultural organisations and those with lived experience of the criminal justice system.
Rock, Paper, Scissors is a free exhibition that features a selection of music, writing, fine art, craft and design by individuals in secure settings. The artworks on display were entered into the 2026 Koestler Awards, the only annual UK-wide arts competition for people in the UK’s criminal justice system. It runs from 16 October to 29 November 2026, at the Undercroft, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre.
James Lisney at the 1901 Arts Club
Pianist James Lisney is playing a special recital at the beautifully intimate 1901 Arts Club in aid of the Irene Taylor Trust.
