About us – the Irene Taylor Trust: Creating Music. Transforming Futures.

Creating original music collaboratively can have a powerful impact on people’s lives, bringing them new confidence, important transferable skills and raised aspirations for the future. Our programmes Music in Prisons, Sounding Out and Making Tracks support people of all ages in prisons, former prisoners rebuilding their lives on release, and young people in challenging circumstances. We have a measurable impact on recidivism, helping people into training and jobs, and on enhancing wellbeing. We work with around 600 participants each year.

The role: Treasurer

We are looking for a qualified accountant to join our Board of Trustees as Treasurer; to take the lead on our work regarding keeping the finances in order and meeting finance governance requirements. We have a Fundraising and Finance Committee chaired by our Vice Chair, Jonathan Adams, who is an investment professional, which you would also join. The Treasurer provides the Board’s principal contribution to overseeing finances at a higher level; as a bank signatory you would also have more regular involvement with office staff in approving larger payments. The office team takes responsibility for day-to-day management of budgeting and accounting.

Our Board is welcoming and productive. We have experience and expertise on the Board and/or the staff group in governance, charity law, fundraising, financial planning, preparing accounts and our core work of making music with our participants.

We would particularly welcome applications from those from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Previous board experience is not required. An induction is provided for all new Trustees.

Person specification:

  • Strong knowledge of charity finances and the Charity Commission’s requirements, or willingness to develop this knowledge
  • A professional accountancy qualification and good financial management experience
  • A focus on good practice
  • The ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the Board and other stakeholders
  • The ability to provide advice on financial matters affecting the charity
  • An understanding of finance and risk management related to our finances
  • A collaborative approach to working with Trustees, staff and partner organisations
  • An interest in and passion for our work
